PMP certification or Project Management Professional Certification is the certification granted to Project Managers by the Project Management Institute. Why PMP certification

To be a project manager it is not necessary that you have this certification but having this certification makes you officially eligible to be one. It also helps at the time of availing promotion and gaining employer/client trust. The certification is a reflection of the person’s skill level, commitment, and abilities. It acts as a tiebreaker when decisions about qualifying or not qualifying are being made. Studies show that a person having PMP certification gets twenty percent higher salary than noncertified counterparts.

Eligibility for PMP exam

Only those who have a high school diploma, associate’s degree or a global equivalent are eligible to appear for the PMP exam. If you only have a high school diploma then you must have 5 years of experience in project management with 7500 contact hours leading projects. If you have a degree then you must have 3 years of experience in project management with 4500 contact hours leading projects. In addition to these, both types of candidates must have Formal Project Management Education for at least 35 hours. All the work done so far with relation to project management must be documented properly. The last step is to become a PMI member which is a paid membership done mostly online. There is a fee to be paid for writing the exam as well. Non Members can also write the exam at a much higher fee.

The Exam

A formal PMI-approved project management course is recommended to prepare yourself for the exam. PMI has a handbook of its own called the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). Other study materials include the PMP Audio workshop and Head First PMP The number of people who pass the PMP exam is roughly 65%. The PMP exam is in a pen-paper format and an online test format. The time duration of the exam is 4 hours. There are 200 multiple choice questions on the test. 3 to 6 months preparation is necessary for the PMP exam. The exam can be written only 3 times. On failing all 3 attempts there is a year wait before retest You have the freedom to schedule the exam on a day of your choice and also pick the exam center closest and most convenient for you.

After the Exam

After the exam, the candidate must complete 60 PDU’s within a span of 3 years. PDU”s are professional development units. These are similar to the pre-exam eligibility contact hours in the field of project management. There are many ways to complete the PDUs easily. These must be submitted to the PMI.
