Despite how common air travel is today, it’s still a truly special experience for both young and old. However, if you’re a parent and you need to take your children on a long-haul flight, you’re probably nervous about the experience. Kids are restless and full of energy, however, they don’t often enjoy being stuck in the same seat for 8 or more hours.

Luckily for you, we’ve done the hard work for you. In this article, you’ll learn everything that you need to know to keep your little ones entertained on a long-haul flight.

Explain what to expect

This step is especially important for children that have never flown before. The whole experience from going through security to sitting on the plane to collecting their bags will be entirely foreign to them. This is why it’s so important to sit down with them and explain everything as best you can so it isn’t a complete shock. Doing so will also help to make your life easier on the day, as you’ve already explained that your little ones need to be respectful and patient.

Prepare your entertainment options

Next, you’ll need to prepare your entertainment options. Whilst many long-haul flights will include some form of entertainment, we don’t recommend relying on this. The children’s options may be lacking, and if you don’t have a backup plan, you’ll need to get creative. Because space will be limited, we recommend bringing a few items. For example, fully charged devices with downloaded episodes of their favourite free kid’s cartoons.

Other options like books, cards, or a toy or two can be great for entertaining your children for hours!

Get your children to help

Giving your children something to do during the journey can give them a sense of responsibility and help prevent boredom. The task that you assign to them will depend on their age. For toddlers and young kids, simply giving them their own bag to look after will be enough. For slightly older kids, holding tickets or presenting passports at the gate can help them to get involved with the experience!

Take turns watching the children

Travelling and minding children is tiring – even if you’re supposed to be on holiday. If you’re travelling with your partner or other members of your family, we recommend taking turns watching the children. This will ensure that all adults get a chance to rest and enjoy the flight too. If you’re able to rest, you’ll be better prepared to look after and entertain your children.

Limit sugar if possible

Sugar treats are delicious, but we all know the effect it has on young children. Trying to keep your little ones calm and still on a long-haul flight is hard enough without having to overcome the extra hurdle of a sugar rush!

Conclusion

After reading this, we’re sure that you’ll be more than ready to entertain your kids on your next long-haul flight!
